Options on variable products

Adding option sets and fields on top of variable products is part of AddOnBoss Pro. Free covers option sets on simple products.

A variable product keeps its variations for colour, size, stock and photos. AddOnBoss adds option sets and fields on top, as priced extras.

When to use it

Keep variations for choices that need their own SKU, such as the sizes you pick in the warehouse. Add options for the extras that don’t: a name to print, a finish, gift wrapping or a rush fee.

This way, you never generate a variation for every mix of extras. An option that can run out can still hold its own stock count.

Add the extras

1. In the WordPress menu, go to Products and open the variable product.
2. In Product data, open the Product options tab.
3. Attach option sets and add fields, as on a simple product. See attach options to a product.
4. Press Update.

On the product page, the shopper picks a variation first. The option prices then add to it, and the running total shows both.

Show a field for some variations only

A field can apply to only some variations. For example, a “Sleeve length” box only for the long-sleeve variation.

1. Open the field’s row on the Product options tab.
2. Under Which variations is it for, pick the variations.
3. Press Update.

Leave it empty and the field applies to every variation. See custom fields.

The variation still needs a price

A variation with no price can't be bought, so its Add to cart button and the options don't show. Price the variations as usual, and the extras appear once a variation is chosen.

What you should see

Open the product page as a shopper. Pick a variation, and the extras show under it. Pick an extra, and the total adds it to the variation’s price.
