Install & your first options

AddOnBoss puts choices, questions and paid extras on any WooCommerce product, with no variations. This page takes you from install to a product a customer can buy with options, in about ten minutes.

Field or option set?

AddOnBoss has two kinds of option. Pick the one that fits, or use both on the same product.

  • A field is one question on one product: a name to print, a message, a date, a tick box. You add it on the product itself.
  • An option set is a list of choices you build once and reuse on many products: colours, sizes, finishes, paid extras. You build it in the Option sets library, then attach it to each product that offers it.

If you will offer the same list on more than one product, make it a set. If it is one question for one product, add a field.

Install

Section titled “Install”
  1. In WordPress, go to Plugins → Add New Plugin and search for AddOnBoss.
  2. Click Install Now, then Activate.
  3. A screen asks whether to share basic site details and get update emails. Allow & Continue and Skip both work.
  4. You land on the AddOnBoss screen, under BossMage in the menu. A short checklist ticks itself off as you go.

You need WordPress 6.4, WooCommerce 8.0 and PHP 8.0 or newer.

Add a field: one question, one product

Section titled “Add a field: one question, one product”
  1. Edit the product, open the Product options tab, click Add a field… and pick the type. For a name or initials, pick Name or text to print.

  2. Type the label your customer will read, such as Name to print. Put a price if it costs extra, and tick Required if every customer must answer.

  3. Click Update. The question is now on the product page.

Attach an option set: a list you reuse

  1. Go to BossMage → Option sets and press + New set.
  2. On What kind of set?, press or use a template under List of choices. Pick the template closest to what you sell, such as Add-ons. To build your own list, press Start blank instead.

  3. The set opens filled in, as your own copy. Rename it or change a price if you like, then press Save set. Nothing is saved until you do.

  4. Edit the product, open the Product options tab, click Attach an option set… and pick your set.

  5. Choose Optional or Required. Required means the customer must pick before they can add the product to the cart. Use it for a colour or a size; keep extras such as gift wrap Optional.

    Check this switch every time

    A newly attached set starts as Required. For a list of extras that would stop anyone buying the product without one, so switch it to Optional before you click Update.

  6. Click Update.

Check it as a customer

Open the product page. The choices are there, and the total changes as you pick. Place a test order. If you have no test payment method, switch on Cash on delivery under WooCommerce → Settings → Payments while you test. The answers appear on the order and in both emails. The checklist on the AddOnBoss screen ticks off as you go: Place a test order ticks when the order goes through, not when the checkout opens.

If something is missing

Section titled “If something is missing”
  • No options on the product page. The product has no price. WooCommerce hides the Add to cart area of a product without one, and the options with it. Set a price on the General tab; zero is fine when the options make the whole price.
  • The customer cannot add it to the cart. A Required set or field is still unanswered. That is right for a size; for extras, switch the set to Optional.
  • Running BundleBoss too? Keep BundleBoss updated. Both plugins share one option-set library and run side by side.
